Innovative Application of geoBingAn in the ACDRI Citizens’ Workshop

In 2024, we collaborated with the Asian Citizens’ Disaster Reduction Promotion Council (ACDRI), Yogyakarta authorities, and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), with additional support from the Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) and KUIS from Japan, to conduct a hands-on humanitarian ICT workshop using the geoBingAn platform. This event demonstrated the practical application of technology in disaster risk reduction and provided valuable insights into improving community disaster preparedness.

At the initial stage of the workshop, participants utilized WhatsApp for disaster reporting, seamlessly integrating real-time data into the geoBingAn system. By leveraging a widely used communication tool, we significantly reduced the learning curve, allowing participants to report disaster situations effortlessly. Through simple, everyday conversations, they could quickly and accurately submit information, enhancing both data collection efficiency and user engagement in disaster response efforts.

On the geoBingAn platform, the integrated disaster data was processed and presented through a range of visualization tools, including interactive disaster maps, statistical charts, and real-time incident timelines. These features provided a clear overview of disaster scenarios, enabling better decision-making and response coordination. The visualization tools offered an intuitive understanding of disaster progression, equipping participants with practical experience in handling emergency situations.

This collaborative workshop fully demonstrated the power of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in strengthening disaster risk reduction at the community level. The hands-on experience highlighted how technology can support grassroots disaster management, improve communication efficiency, and enhance post-disaster analysis. Through this initiative, all participants gained valuable disaster response insights while reinforcing the importance of international collaboration in advancing disaster resilience.
